Paris River Cruise on the Seine

Back

One hour of rest and re-education
On a summer day in June, we were out and about.  Looking at all the sites we could fit into one day.  We were ahead of schedule so we decided to add a river tour of Paris to our days itinerary.

On the down river end of the Ile de la Cite (the island that Notre Dame is on) there is a place to catch a boat the leaves about every hour.  The trip is just over an hour and you can see all the major sites of Paris as viewed from the river.

The trip cost 11 euro for adults and 6 for children.

Starting near the Louvre, we headed down river toward the Eiffel Tower.  On the way we saw the Concord Bridge leading to the Bourbon Palace on the left.  This is where the members of parlement sit.

Farther down is the Alexandre II Bridge.  Here you get the first impressive glimpse of the tower amid the pillars at the southern end of the bridge.

This bridge was built to commemorate the franco-rusian alliance at the end of the 19th century.

Here you can see a representation of Saint Petersbourg and the river Neva.

Shortly after follows the American Church on the left, an impressive structure looming over the treetops.

At the Alma Bridge is this interesting sculpture called "le zouave".  Parisians watch the level of the river on this statue.  In 1910 during the great floods the poor man was covered by the water up to his neck.

Of course, what good would any collection of Paris photos be without many gratuitous images of the tower?

On the way back you will notice this replica of the torch of the Statue of Liberty in New York City.  It was a gift from the US of course.

It is a common misconception that this was erected to commemorate the death of Lady Di near here.

Also on the return you will find the glass roof of the Grand Palais creeping above the trees.  This building was built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition and has since remained a place for exhibits, typically popular, plus the science museum.

Finally, we come to Notre Dame, but I will save that for another page.  Photographic coverage of this place deserves special attention.
