After walking around the city of Cadiz, Spain for just over an hour we decided to turn inland to see how the residents of this city live.

We turned away from the Atlantic shore on Calle de la Rosa.

The area is populated by college students and we felt quite comfortable walking with our 10 and 12 year old boys.  The streets from this point were quite narrow so we had to keep an eye out for the occasional car.  They all seemed quite aware of the pedestrians and we were only once nearly in harms way when I was not watching as I stepped out of a store.

Turning left on San Rafael, we found a large grocery store on the right and decided to try to get a few supplies for the rest of our walk.  It was exciting.  We used the dictionary and communicated with no English with the store staff.  They were a lot of help and very friendly.  We ended up purchasing mouth wash, nail polish remover, cookies and clear tape.  Quite a varied selection for not knowing the language.  We were very proud of our accomplishment.

We proceeded up to the Gran Teatro Falla and turned right on Sacramento.  This narrow road lead us a long way through residential areas of the city and past shops with pastries, crafts and more.  We could have purchased nearly any daily need item somewhere on this road.

Somewhere before Sagasta, we found the post office and mailed several post cards to friends and family back home.

We continued in a nearly straight line and past a flower market a few blocks further.

All in all, it took nearly two hours to get from the shore, through the city and arrive at  Iglesia de Santo Domingo. It was truly a 'native' experience none of us will forget.  The people were friendly and tried their best to help when we needed.  Once out of the 'touristy' areas, we felt quite safe among those who live in the city, many for all their lives, to be sure.

From the Church of Santo Domingo, we wandered for only fifteen minutes to arrive back at port and crash in our cabin on the Disney Magic, ready for the next leg of the first Transatlantic voyage.
