One foot of snow, no school, snow forts, good times!

Here is the view across the road at the neighbors house at about 2 inches.
Thursday, January 28, 2010 was the one year anniversary of the great 2009 ice storm and we were once again in for a big'un'.

The front of the cabin the morning after when the snow finally stopped.
Val, at the age of 14, drives himself and Adam to and from the bus stop every day.  It is only a mile and it is good level road.

After school as he drove home there was the beginnings of a light mist.  Nothing really started freezing till late in the evening when heavy sleet accumulated to about 1/2 inch.  As the sleet hit the windows it sounded a little threatening at times but nothing like hail.

Onslo ready for the power outage that never came... good news.
By morning it was snowing but during the night we had some freezing rain that was evident by the layer of ice that was the sleet the evening before.

Check out the snow drift on the roof. Common in the north but rare here.
By about 10:00 AM we had about 2 inches on top of the ice and it accumulated at about 1/2 inch an hour most of the day and half the night of Friday, January 29, 2010.  Saturday morning before the sun started warming things up I took several measurements around the property and decided that we received a total of just under 12 inches.

I had to dig out the barn to open the door.
I spent the morning cutting a scrap piece of sheet metal form the cabin roof to size and bolting it to the inside of the rock rake on the tractor.  I was definitely not a permanent solution to the snow moving needed but it worked well for this snow and I will be able to save it for another couple of good snow storms in the next few years.  It worked well as I moved snow from about 3/4 of a mile of our road that included our two primary neighbors plus the three driveways for all three houses.

The wood shed in danger of collapsing. I had to clear it off four times.
Next I cleared the garage slab and piled the snow for the boys and they dug out a snow cave big enough for both to climb in and keep warm.  It was snug and they realized the warmth and protection from the elements could be nice in an emergency situation that should never arise... but the education is good.  They had fun, too.

Saturday night I ended the day slowly clearing the slab out front of snow so that we could get out for church in the morning but when I went to turn the Durango around I discovered that the area in front of our home was hard to maneuver through and ended up having to get Val to drive while I pushed the Durango back into the drive way with Onslo the tractor.  It was stressful and I broke the plastic on the backup light in the process.  Church was off the slate.

The Saturn, the car Val drives to the bus stop.
Sunday morning the sun broke through and started warming the cleared garage slab, cleared decks around the cabin and the patio out front.  The road, though not well cleared by my sheet metal scraper, did have the dirt mixed in to the thin layer of snow so hopefully it will be enough to soak up the sun rays and melt.

The hole and log mill.
The snow is beautiful and you can see pictures around our cabin here.
